Creating an Inclusive Environment: What to Expect and How You Can Contribute at AFA Leaders Conference

October 4, 2024

At Agriculture Future of America (AFA), fostering an inclusive, welcoming environment is at the heart of everything we do. AFA Leaders Conference brings together students, alumni and industry professionals from all walks of life, and we’re committed to ensuring everyone feels respected, valued and empowered to contribute.

Here’s what you can expect at Leaders Conference — and how you can help us create a space where inclusivity and positivity thrive.

Celebrate Differences and Encourage Dialogue

AFA Leaders Conference is all about bringing together people from different backgrounds, regions and experiences to learn and grow. We believe diversity enriches conversations and leads to better collaboration.

What to Expect: You’ll engage in discussions with peers from all corners of the country, each with unique perspectives and experiences. The environment will be open and encouraging for participants to share their thoughts and ideas.

How You Can Contribute: Embrace opportunities to talk to people outside your usual circles. Be curious about different perspectives and listen actively. Ask thoughtful questions and approach differences with a mindset of learning and collaboration. Create space for others to share their ideas, especially those who may be quieter or hesitant.

REAL TALK: With this being an election year, we recognize that political conversations can sometimes become divisive. However, our commitment to fostering an inclusive and respectful environment remains unwavering. We encourage open dialogue around political issues, as long as it remains professional, thoughtful and rooted in respect for others' perspectives.

We believe that our attendees, whether students or professionals, can engage in meaningful discussions while upholding mutual respect. Hateful actions or discriminatory behavior will not be tolerated. By creating space for dialogue, we aim to ensure that everyone feels safe expressing their beliefs without fear of judgment or hostility. Let’s remember that it’s possible to hold strong beliefs while respecting the beliefs of others.

Active Allyship and Support

Creating an inclusive environment requires everyone’s participation. Whether you’re speaking up against exclusive behavior or supporting someone who feels out of place, being an ally is about actively fostering an environment of respect and inclusion.

What to Expect: Throughout the conference, you’ll have opportunities to practice being an ally — whether it’s through listening, speaking up or offering support.

How You Can Contribute: Be proactive in supporting those around you. If you see someone being excluded or treated unfairly, step in and offer a hand. Engage in conversations about allyship and encourage others to do the same. Inclusion is everyone’s responsibility.

Openness to Feedback and Growth

No one is perfect, and creating an inclusive environment is a continuous learning process. At AFA, we encourage everyone to be open to feedback and willing to grow in how we approach inclusion and respect.

What to Expect: The conference is a safe space for learning, and we’ll facilitate conversations about how we can all be better allies, leaders and collaborators. Mistakes might happen, but they’ll be treated as opportunities for growth.

How You Can Contribute: Be open to constructive feedback if someone points out a behavior or language that might be exclusive or insensitive. Approach these moments with humility and a desire to improve. Likewise, if you see room for improvement, offer feedback with kindness and understanding.

Using Inclusive Language

Inclusive language is key to creating a space where everyone feels like they belong. At AFA, we avoid assumptions and encourage attendees to be mindful of the words they use.

What to Expect: Throughout the conference, you’ll hear our staff and speakers using gender-neutral terms and language that is respectful of all backgrounds, identities and experiences.

How You Can Contribute: Be aware of your own language. Replace phrases like “ladies and gentlemen” with “everyone” or “team.” When discussing diverse cultures or experiences, stay respectful and avoid stereotypes. If you’re unsure, ask questions and be open to learning how to be more inclusive.

Download our Inclusive Language Guide to help yourself replace some common phrases that may not be inclusive.

Respect for Preferred Pronouns

At AFA, we make it a priority to respect and use each person’s preferred pronouns. It’s a small but significant way to acknowledge and honor everyone’s identity.

What to Expect: At the beginning of the conference, we’ll encourage attendees to share their preferred pronouns, which will also be included on name tags. This is a simple yet impactful way to set a tone of respect right from the start.

How You Can Contribute: Use the pronouns people share with you. If you’re unsure or forget, it’s okay to politely ask, “Can you remind me of your pronouns?” Being mindful of pronouns helps create a welcoming and respectful atmosphere for everyone.

Gender-Neutral Bathroom Options

To make sure everyone feels comfortable, we provide gender-neutral bathrooms at AFA Leaders Conference. This ensures no one has to worry about fitting into a specific category just to feel safe using a restroom.

What to Expect: Gender-neutral restrooms will be clearly marked and accessible to all attendees. Announcements and maps will highlight their locations.

How You Can Contribute: Show your support by respecting the availability of these spaces and acknowledging their importance in creating a more inclusive environment.

Creating a Sense of Belonging

Ultimately, we want every attendee at AFA Leaders Conference to feel like they belong. Whether it’s through participating in workshops, networking events or social activities, we strive to make sure everyone feels connected and valued.

What to Expect: You’ll be part of a community where inclusivity is prioritized and where every individual is celebrated for what they bring to the table. Expect to leave the conference with new friends, connections and a sense of belonging.

How You Can Contribute: Make an effort to connect with others, especially those who may seem shy or isolated. Introduce yourself, invite them into conversations and create a welcoming space. Your actions can make a huge difference in someone’s experience.

Inclusivity Starts with You

At AFA, we believe everyone has a role to play in creating an inclusive and positive environment. AFA Leaders Conference is an opportunity not just to learn and grow professionally, but to practice inclusivity in real time —  through respectful dialogue, allyship and open-mindedness. By embracing these practices, you’ll contribute to a culture where everyone feels seen, heard and valued.
